DIY Dog Spa (with Recipes and Recommended Products)

Kardogshians' resident diva, Khaleesi, has always been the emotional support companion of her human, besides that, she's also working hard in bringing quality content on all Kardogshian platforms. She's been doing photoshoots left and right, traveling from one province to the other, and helping her human in every way she can. So her human, as a DIYer, DIYed a whole day of spa treatment for Khaleesi.

Our furbabies are our on the clock 24/7 best friend, who will always make themselves available whenever their human needs them. They are our emotional companions, guardians, helpers, aids, amongst many things they'd do for us. It's only fitting to treat them to a relaxing spa day at home. Here's what happened, what we used, and the benefits of the following leisures.

We gave her a warm and relaxing bath, and facial to start off the spa session she's going to have. We filled her bowl with warm water. Make sure that the water is not too hot that your dog might suffer burns, to test if the water is bearable, do what you do when your trying out the temperature of milk from a baby bottle.

We used a pet bath bomb, we bought at Pet Island. A bath bomb is made, in large quantities, with epson salt, which relaxes tired, sore muscles as well as improves nerve functions. If your dog has dry, itchy skin, an Epsom salt bath can soothe and relieve tender skin. If your doghas been injured or is healing from surgery and can take wet baths, Epsom salt can assist with quicker healing and improve swelling

If you cant buy one, you can always make one, and here's how...

- 1/2 cup Baking Soda- 1/4 cup Epson Salt-1/4 cup Cornstarch-1 tbsp Coconut/Vegetable Oil- 2-4 drops of Essential Oil
1. Mix together all the dry ingredients, mix it well as you'd want all ingredients to be incorporated well.2. Add all wet ingredients and mix well, at this point you'll notice the mixture will have a crumby texture.3. Put your mixture in a silicone mold (you can get silicon molds at baking stores and Daiso) and let it dry for a day or so.

Other things we used are WAHL's Oatmeal Shampoo, a pet bath glove  and a DIY Oatmeal Conditioner. As you may have notice we use a lot of oatmeal, this is because oats soothes, nourishes, and moisturizes dog's skin, and it gives your dog's fur that shine that lasts for days.

It's easy and cheap to make. Here's how....

-1 cup Oats-1/4 cup honey
-1 tbsp Coconut/Vegetable Oil
1. Grind the oats using a food processor or a blender2. Add all the remaining ingredients and mix it well until there are no more dry oats
Note:-All ingredients are natural and beneficial not only to a canine skin but also humans', so if you wanna try this scrub for yourself, go for it.-If there are leftovers, store it in a tight lid container and put it in the fridge.-This conditioner is not for everyday use, at most you may utilize it every 3 days.

We gave her a facial first, using the DIY Oatmeal Conditioner. Scoop a small amount of the mixture in gently rubbed it all over her face (You can also apply it to the entire body) Leave it for 2-3 minutes then rinse it off.

In a basin filled with warm water, add the Pet Bath Bomb, and wait for it to dissolve.

Once it has fully dissolved, allow your pet to soak, relax and enjoy all the soothing effect of the bath bomb for another 2-4 minutes.

Next you should lather your dog with his or her shampoo, use the bath glove to ensure all the areas of you dog's body are covered with soap. Afterwards, rinse with warm water.

Lastly we blowdried her hair in preparation for the next leisure activity.

While we have spared no expense for our resident diva, anyone can have their own version of this activity and can use other pet-safe products of their choosing, the goal for this activity is simply to have her relaxed, clean her up and nurture, soothe, and moisturize her skin

Khaleesi always has her signature manicured nails with her. So basically the next activity is to do her nails.

For this part we only used a nail clipper, and nail file that's commonly available at all pet stores, grocery, and hardware stores. The use of PET-SAFE nail polish is optional, just make sure that if you are to polish those nails, use pet-safe nail polish (Not the regular ones) Pet safe nail polish brands that we trust are Color Paws, I <3 Pet Head, Nail&Bones, Espree, and Pawdicure. We got our Color Paws Pet Nail Polish at Dogs and the City

You can also use Pet Nail Caps if you wish, but it's harder to keep on than pet nail polish. Pet nail polish comes off naturally, do not use nail polish remover as the scent can be harmful to dogs.

Cut of the nails, Use your fingers to separate the toes for clipping and hold the paw gently. Use a pair of blunt edged children's scissors to remove excess toe hair: nothing dulls clippers quicker than cutting hair! Remember, to try your best to not quick your dog's nails as it causes harm to them. But if you did so, rest assured that there's no dog that has ever died from a quicked toenail. If you “quick” your dog accidentally, give a yummy treat right away

Use a nail file to sand off sharp and uneven nails.

Gently apply pet nail polish one coating at a time, add the first coat, let it dry, then add another until you get the desired result.

Do not let go of your pet's paw until the nail polish has dried, YOU MUST AVOID your dog from licking the wet nail polish. For quicker drying use a hairdryer.

Again the use of pet nail polish is optional, however you must always clip your pet's nail at least twice a month.

The next logical step is to give her a dry foot spa. It's a simple paw massage and moisturizing.

There are plenty of Paw lotion or Paw balms available, but what we have tried thus far is this Paw Cream by Pet Style, we also got this at Pet Island. What this does is both protect the dog paws, and moisturize and repair them. For rough, cracked, chapped and flaky skin, and even skin with hyperkeratosis, it can help heal, moisturize and repair it.

Just apply a small amount to your dog's paws, rub it in a circular motion. Make sure the entire paws are covered. Gently massage their paws as a bonus treat. Let it dry completely before letting your little ones run around.

Last but not the least is a dog massage. Dog massage aids in the circulation of fluids throughout the body which assists the joints and muscles flush toxins from the tissues. The results include reduced pain and stiffness, more flexibility and greater range of motion. Massage also increases blood flow, lowers blood pressure and improves cardiovascular health. It also helps release endorphins which makes our doggies happy.

Logistics wise we only used a pet massager from Migo's, if you're curious as to where we got the massage table, it's basically a table top iron board from Ikea. We also had cucumber water and treats for Khaleesi to snack on.

Start with several minutes of petting strokes over your dog's entire body. Briskly rub the large muscles (neck, shoulders, buttocks, and thighs) with the heel of your hand. Gently lift and squeeze the muscles. The technique is a lot like kneading bread dough.

We made her lie on her back first and started with her chest area for 7 minutes because that's her favorite part

Next we worked on her back, shoulders, neck and thighs for a good 10 minutes.

We then whipped out this pet massager and just rolled it all over her entire body. This pet massager looks exactly like the ones being sold for humans but it's a lot smaller and less tense. (We compared) It looks so weird, but we guarantee that she loves it.

The take away here is that, while it seems like a luxury, your pet deserves a little relaxation treat once in a while. Even as casual as changing your pet bath to warm water, casually massaging their body on a chill weekend, and trimming their nails, something as simple as those goes a long way, and the benefits are something your dog cannot get anywhere.
